Who are we?

The Hikers organization is dedicated to scholarship, service, and hospitality. The Hikers began in 1924 with a small group of women in the Melvin Village area of Tuftonboro, New Hampshire, who gathered informally in each other’s homes for “something to do.” Since transportation was not readily available, the women hiked to their meetings thus becoming known as “the hikers.” By 1930, when so many wished to join, the group formally organized with bylaws and elected officers. In 1997 The Hikers incorporated and in 2010 became an official 501c3 non-profit corporation. Our mission is to raise monies for scholarship awards, to make donations to area charities, and to promote community awareness through social and intellectual cooperation.
